On the surface, a problem of money and accounts. The real problem was that no one believed anyone any more. My work was not to do the accounting, but to rebuild belief in the ruins — first a ledger every party accepts, then a point of hope everyone recognises, and from there order grows back. Building is something many can do; carrying an enterprise's wind-down through to the end, where none of the problems are on the surface, is the real test.

Having measured and checked every figure by hand is the foundation of every judgment since.
